Chapter 9
Charley chose tonight to invite the Millers over for dinner. It was fun spending time with the Miller boys and getting to know their wives better. Around seven, Rory announced that she needed to go in and feed the kittens, so I offered to help. The poor thing looked exhausted. It would be nice when the kittens were old enough for us to eliminate the middle of the night feeding.
After the kittens were fed and tucked in, Rory decided to watch TV in her room, and I decided to grab Jack and go for a walk. There really was something special about walking through the resort on a warm summer evening. The sound of waves in the background seemed to compete with the drone of crickets and the laughter of children who were taking advantage of the mostly deserted pool. The resort featured walkways connecting all the buildings as well as one area of the resort to another. Tiki torches had been lit along the sand line, and the light from fires in the pits provided a festive air to the evening.
Once Iâd passed the pool area as well as the beach area most frequently utilized by families, I headed to the very western end of the island, where the old lighthouse was the only building other than the cabanas. After climbing up onto the little wall that separated the lighthouse from the beach, I stood and looked out to sea, pulling at threads of memories from years spent standing in this very spot as a child. Jackâs Hideaway really had been a fun place to grow up. There were always kids to play with, and the pools, bay, and beach were a big plus. Logan was the only other kid who lived at the resort on a year-round basis. My sisters and I had school friends that we often visited and invited over, but for many years, it was Logan who was my best friend.
Logan and I were not only close in age, but we both liked to swim and surf. We also liked to make up stories about the guests, which we sometimes acted out by following the guests around and spying on them. Iâm not sure the resort ever actually played host to a ghost hunter, international spy, or movie star, but in our minds and in our imaginations, complex mysteries had been imagined and played out on a regular basis.
Deciding to head back, I jumped down off the wall and called Jack. As I passed the cabana where Liam had lived ever since heâd taken on the job as the resortâs groundskeeper, I noticed him sitting on his front porch. He waved me over, so I went to sit with him for a spell.
âI heard you were back. Have a seat,â Liam offered.
I sat down on a bright blue beach chair. âIâve been back for almost a week. I was wondering why we hadnât run into each other.â
âI had to go into the city for some tests.
